Mercedes-Benz GLS Lemon Law

Talk to a Mercedes-Benz lemon law attorney — your Mercedes-Benz GLS may qualify for a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement.

If your Mercedes-Benz GLS — especially the Maybach GLS 600 — was recalled for a 48-volt ground connection that can overheat and cause a fire, or for a fuel pump that can shut down and cut your drive power, those are serious safety defects. If repairs don't resolve them, your GLS may qualify as a California lemon.

The Defect

The GLS 48-volt ground connection and fuel-pump problems

The GLS's most alarming defect is a fire risk. Mercedes recalled certain 2021–2023 Maybach GLS 600 vehicles because a 48-volt ground connection under the passenger seat may not have been secured properly during assembly. A loose ground lug can increase electrical resistance at the connection, causing it to overheat — which raises the risk of a fire. Dealers were directed to inspect and tighten the connection, and owner notification letters went out in May 2024 under Mercedes' recall 2024040002.

The GLS was also recalled for a fuel-pump defect: the fuel pump may shut down, resulting in a loss of drive power. Losing power while driving is a serious safety hazard that can increase the risk of a crash. Owner notification for that campaign was mailed in June 2024 under Mercedes' recall 2023070012.

The GLS is a heavy, complex luxury SUV, and owners also report electrical faults, air-suspension issues, and driver-assist glitches on top of these recalls. A recall by itself does not make a vehicle a lemon — but when the fix doesn't hold, the same defect keeps recurring, or your GLS sits out of service waiting on parts or repairs, California's Lemon Law may entitle you to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement.

Known Issues

Commonly Reported Mercedes-Benz GLS Problems

48-volt ground connection under the passenger seat overheating (fire risk)
Fuel pump shutdown causing a sudden loss of drive power
Electrical faults and warning lights across multiple systems
Air-suspension and ride-height malfunctions
Repeat failures after a recall repair, or long waits for parts

Not every Mercedes-Benz GLS is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.

Your Rights

Is Your Mercedes-Benz GLS a Lemon?

A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your GLS has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.

If your Mercedes-Benz GLS qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and Mercedes-Benz pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Common Questions

Mercedes-Benz GLS Lemon Law FAQs

Is my Mercedes-Benz GLS a lemon because of the 48-volt fire recall?

It may be. The 48-volt ground-connection overheating defect on the Maybach GLS 600 was recalled, but a recall alone isn't a lemon. If the repair doesn't resolve the risk, the problem recurs, or your GLS is out of service for an extended time, California's Lemon Law can entitle you to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement — with Mercedes-Benz paying your attorney fees.

My GLS lost power from the fuel pump — does that strengthen my claim?

Yes. A fuel pump that shuts down and causes a loss of drive power is a serious safety defect, which California treats more seriously and which can require fewer failed repair attempts to qualify. Keep your repair orders and note each date the vehicle was in the shop, then get a free case review.

What can I recover for a defective GLS?

Potentially a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — plus your attorney fees paid by Mercedes-Benz. There's no cost to you to pursue a claim.
