Volkswagen’s modern problems are software problems. The ID.4 shipped with an infotainment and electrical architecture that owners have been fighting since launch — screens that go black, doors that will not unlock, cars that will not charge, and updates that fix one thing while breaking another. Dealers describe this as teething. The statute describes it as a defect.
Your Volkswagen may qualify under the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act if a substantial, warranty-covered defect survives a reasonable number of repair attempts, or if the vehicle has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days. Software visits count as repair attempts. If VW updates the car to fix your defect and the defect comes back, that is a failed repair — and it belongs in your file.
One point in Volkswagen owners’ favor: Volkswagen Group of America has NOT opted into California’s AB 1755 procedures. That means the traditional four-year statute of limitations applies, and it runs from when you discovered — or reasonably should have discovered — the defect, not from the date you bought the car. That is a meaningfully longer window than owners of GM, Ford, Stellantis, Hyundai or Kia vehicles get. It is not unlimited, but you likely have more time than you think.

Do software updates count as repair attempts on my ID.4?
Yes. If Volkswagen applies a software fix for your defect and the defect returns, that is a failed repair attempt — and it is evidence. The 2024 ID.4 carries eight NHTSA campaigns, several of them software and electrical. Keep the record of every visit and every update.
How long do I have to file a Volkswagen claim in California?
Longer than owners of many other brands. Volkswagen has not opted into California’s AB 1755 procedures, so the traditional four-year statute of limitations applies, running from when you discovered or should have discovered the defect.
My ID.4’s screen goes black and the doors won’t open. Is that substantial?
Yes. In an ID.4 the screen controls the climate system and the backup camera, and a car you cannot reliably get into is a car you cannot reliably use. That impairs use and safety — which is the statutory test, not a cosmetic complaint.
The dealer says these are just teething problems. Is that a defense?
Not a legal one. There is no grace period in the Song-Beverly Act for a new model that was shipped before its software was finished. If the defect is substantial and VW cannot fix it after a reasonable number of attempts, you have a claim.
