McLaren GTS Lemon Law

The McLaren GTS is the brand's newest grand tourer — and it was included in McLaren's 2025 recall for a brake defect that can lock a rear wheel and cause loss of control. If a repair doesn't resolve the problem, your GTS may qualify as a California lemon.

The Defect

The GTS rear-wheel brake-lockup problem

In 2025 McLaren recalled a group of its supercars — including the GTS, along with the Artura, GT, 600LT, and 720S — because brake lines could be connected to the wrong side at the control module. With the pipes crossed, braking input can act on the opposite rear wheel and lock it, and the anti-lock and stability systems may not function correctly. A locked rear wheel can cause the driver to lose control and crash.

McLaren began investigating after a track incident in which a driver lost control from an unusual lockup, and mailed owner notification letters in April 2025. Dealers inspect and correct the brake-line connections free of charge. Because the GTS is a current, low-volume model, owners can also face long waits for specialist parts and service.

A recall is McLaren offering a free fix — not an automatic lemon. But when the repair doesn't hold, the same or a related fault keeps recurring, or your GTS is out of service for an extended time, California's Lemon Law may entitle you to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement, with McLaren paying your attorney fees.

Known Issues

Commonly Reported McLaren GTS Problems

Rear-wheel lockup from crossed brake lines (2025 recall)
Braking that acts on the wrong rear wheel
ABS / stability control not functioning as intended
Long waits for parts and specialist service on a new low-volume car
Recurring faults or extended downtime after a repair

Not every McLaren GTS is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.

Your Rights

Is Your McLaren GTS a Lemon?

A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your GTS has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.

If your McLaren GTS qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and McLaren pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Common Questions

McLaren GTS Lemon Law FAQs

Is the McLaren GTS brake recall a California lemon law issue?

It can be. The GTS was included in McLaren's 2025 recall for brake lines that can lock a rear wheel and cause loss of control. A recall alone isn't a lemon — but if the repair doesn't fix the problem, it recurs, or your GTS is out of service for an extended time, you may be entitled to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement, with McLaren paying your attorney fees.

My GTS is nearly new — is it too soon for a lemon claim?

No. Some of the strongest lemon claims involve newer vehicles still under warranty. What matters is whether a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or whether the car has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days. Keep every repair order from day one and note each date the GTS is in the shop.

What can I recover for a defective McLaren GTS?

Potentially a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement, or a cash-and-keep settlement — plus your attorney fees paid by McLaren. On a six-figure car the figures can be substantial, at no cost to you.
