McLaren 765LT Lemon Law

The McLaren 765LT is a limited, track-focused supercar — and it was recalled because its rear cabin window can come unbonded and detach. If the repair doesn't resolve the problem or your 765LT keeps returning to the shop, it may qualify as a California lemon.

The Defect

The 765LT rear-window detachment problem

McLaren recalled 2021 765LT Coupe vehicles (NHTSA 24V901000) because insufficient adhesive bonding of the rear cabin window (the polycarbonate panel behind the seats, over the engine bay) can allow the window to detach from its support frame. A panel that separates at speed is both a road hazard and a sign of a build-quality failure. The recall covered a small U.S. population — roughly 163 cars — and dealers install bespoke fasteners at each corner of the panel.

Because the 765LT is a low-volume, hand-built car, owners can also face long waits for parts and specialist service — which matters under the Lemon Law, since extended time out of service is one of the ways a vehicle can qualify.

A recall is McLaren offering a free fix — it isn't automatically a lemon. But if the repair doesn't hold, the same or a related defect keeps recurring, or your 765LT is out of service for an extended time, California's Lemon Law may entitle you to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement, with McLaren paying your attorney fees.

Known Issues

Commonly Reported McLaren 765LT Problems

Rear cabin window loosening or detaching (adhesive-bonding recall)
Wind noise, rattles, or panel movement from the rear window area
Long waits for parts and specialist service on a low-volume car
Recurring build-quality or trim defects after repair
Extended downtime while the car sits at the dealer

Not every McLaren 765LT is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.

Your Rights

Is Your McLaren 765LT a Lemon?

A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your 765LT has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.

If your McLaren 765LT qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and McLaren pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Common Questions

McLaren 765LT Lemon Law FAQs

Is the McLaren 765LT rear-window recall a California lemon law issue?

It can be. McLaren recalled 2021 765LT vehicles (NHTSA 24V901000) because the rear cabin window can detach due to insufficient adhesive bonding. A recall alone isn't a lemon — but if the fix doesn't hold, the defect recurs, or your 765LT is out of service for an extended time, you may be entitled to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement, with McLaren paying your attorney fees.

My 765LT is rarely driven — can it still be a lemon?

Yes. The Lemon Law looks at whether a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or whether the car has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days — not how many miles it has. A collectible driven only occasionally that keeps returning for the same defect can still qualify. Keep every repair order and note each date it was in the shop.

What can I recover for a defective 765LT?

Potentially a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement, or a cash-and-keep settlement — plus your attorney fees paid by McLaren. On a limited-run six-figure car the figures can be substantial, at no cost to you.
