McLaren 720S Lemon Law
The McLaren 720S is a track-capable supercar that has drawn several serious safety recalls — a fuel tank that can corrode and leak, and brakes that can fail or lock a rear wheel. If a repair doesn't resolve the problem or your 720S keeps returning to the shop, it may qualify as a California lemon.
The 720S fuel-tank corrosion and brake problems
McLaren recalled 2016–2020 720S vehicles (NHTSA 20V231000) because a noise-vibration-and-harshness (NVH) foam pad sitting under the aluminum fuel tank can trap moisture against the tank. Over time that causes corrosion and micro-perforations, and the tank can leak fuel — which, near hot engine components, raises the risk of a fire. Dealers remove the foam pad, inspect the tank, and replace it if corrosion is found.
Separately, McLaren recalled 2019–2020 720S vehicles because the brake-assembly banjo bolt could be missing the drilled holes that feed brake fluid to the caliper (NHTSA 21V561000). That can cause the brakes to fail on one corner of the car, pulling it to one side under braking. In 2025 McLaren issued a further recall covering the 720S and other models for brake lines connected to the wrong side at the control module, which can lock a rear wheel and cause loss of control.
A recall is McLaren offering a free fix — it isn't automatically a lemon. But when the repair doesn't hold, the same fuel, brake, electrical, or drivetrain fault keeps coming back, or your 720S is out of service for an extended time, California's Lemon Law may entitle you to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement, with McLaren paying your attorney fees.
Commonly Reported McLaren 720S Problems
Not every McLaren 720S is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.
Is Your McLaren 720S a Lemon?
A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your 720S has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.
If your McLaren 720S qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and McLaren pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Is the McLaren 720S fuel-tank or brake recall covered by California's Lemon Law?
It can be. The 720S was recalled for a corroding fuel tank that can leak (NHTSA 20V231000) and for brakes that can fail on one corner (NHTSA 21V561000), plus a 2025 brake-line recall. A recall alone isn't a lemon — but if the repair doesn't fix the problem, the fault recurs, or your 720S is out of service for an extended time, you may be owed a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement, with McLaren paying your attorney fees.
My 720S has low miles but keeps going back for the same issue — does that count?
Yes. California's Lemon Law turns on whether a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or whether the car has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days — not mileage. Low miles on a supercar that repeatedly returns for the same fault can actually help your claim. Save every repair order and note each date the car was in the shop.
What can I recover for a defective 720S?
Potentially a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement, or a cash-and-keep settlement — plus your attorney fees paid by McLaren. On a six-figure car the numbers can be significant, and there's no cost to you to pursue a claim.
