McLaren GT Lemon Law

The McLaren GT is a grand-touring supercar that has drawn multiple safety recalls — a hood that can pop open while driving, a driver's airbag that may not deploy, and brake defects. If a repair doesn't resolve the problem, your GT may qualify as a California lemon.

The Defect

The McLaren GT hood, airbag, and brake problems

McLaren recalled 2020–2023 McLaren GT vehicles (NHTSA 24V661000) because the manual hood-release cable can be routed too tightly, which can cause the front hood to open unexpectedly while driving — blocking the driver's view and creating a serious crash risk. Dealers reroute or replace the cable.

In a separate recall covering 2019–2021 GT vehicles, the driver's airbag and the occupant-restraint controller could be improperly connected, which can deactivate the driver's airbag so it won't deploy in a crash. McLaren GT models were also within the population affected by the fuel-tank corrosion issue, and the GT is included in McLaren's 2025 recall for brake lines connected to the wrong side at the control module, which can lock a rear wheel.

A recall is McLaren offering a free repair — not an automatic lemon. But when the fix doesn't hold, the same fault keeps recurring, or your GT is out of service for an extended time, California's Lemon Law may entitle you to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement, with McLaren paying your attorney fees.

Known Issues

Commonly Reported McLaren GT Problems

Hood opening or unlatching while driving (release-cable recall)
Driver's airbag that may not deploy (improper connection)
Fuel-tank corrosion and leak risk on affected cars
Rear-wheel lockup from crossed brake lines (2025 recall)
Repeat repairs or long downtime for the same defect

Not every McLaren GT is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.

Your Rights

Is Your McLaren GT a Lemon?

A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your GT has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.

If your McLaren GT qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and McLaren pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Common Questions

McLaren GT Lemon Law FAQs

Is the McLaren GT hood or airbag recall a California lemon law issue?

It can be. The GT was recalled for a hood that can open while driving (NHTSA 24V661000) and for a driver's airbag that may not deploy, among other defects. A recall alone isn't a lemon — but if the repair doesn't fix the problem, it recurs, or your GT is out of service for an extended time, you may be entitled to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement, with McLaren paying your attorney fees.

The hood or airbag defect sounds dangerous — does that strengthen my claim?

A defect that affects safety — a hood that can open at speed, or an airbag that may not deploy — is exactly the kind of substantial defect the Lemon Law is meant to address. If it can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or the car sits out of service, your claim is stronger. Keep every repair order and record each date the GT was in the shop.

What can I recover for a defective McLaren GT?

Potentially a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement, or a cash-and-keep settlement — plus your attorney fees paid by McLaren, at no cost to you.
