Lexus RX Lemon Law
Talk to a Lexus lemon law attorney — your Lexus RX may qualify for a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement.
If your Lexus RX loses its backup camera image when you shift into reverse, freezes on the multimedia screen, or stalls, you're not stuck just because Lexus has a reputation for reliability. When repairs don't hold, your RX may qualify as a California lemon.
The RX backup camera blackout problem
The most notable recent RX defect is a rearview camera that can go blank when the driver shifts into reverse. Lexus recalled certain 2023–2026 RX non-hybrid vehicles (NHTSA campaign 26V162) after finding that a brief drop in electrical power during an engine restart can interrupt the camera before it fully loads, leaving the multimedia display blank during a backing maneuver. Because a working backup camera is required by federal safety standard FMVSS 111, this is treated as a safety defect, not a cosmetic glitch.
The RX has drawn other complaints too. Owners report infotainment and navigation systems that freeze, reboot, or lose Bluetooth pairing, low-pressure fuel pumps that can cause rough running or stalling (earlier RX 350L models were part of a Denso fuel-pump recall), climate-control and A/C problems, and assorted electrical and sensor faults that trigger dashboard warning lights. Any one of these can turn an otherwise dependable RX into a repeat visitor at the service department.
California's Lemon Law does not care about a brand's reputation — it looks at your specific vehicle. If a substantial defect covered by the warranty is not repaired after a reasonable number of attempts, or if your RX has been out of service for an extended time while the dealer tries to fix it or waits on parts, you may be entitled to a buyback, a replacement vehicle, or a cash settlement, with Lexus paying your attorney fees. A recall is not automatically a lemon, but a defect that keeps coming back after repair often is.
Commonly Reported Lexus RX Problems
Not every Lexus RX is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.
Is Your Lexus RX a Lemon?
A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your RX has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.
If your Lexus RX qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and Lexus pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Is my Lexus RX backup camera problem covered by California's Lemon Law?
It can be. The blank rearview camera issue was recalled (NHTSA 26V162), but a recall by itself isn't a lemon. If the software update or camera replacement doesn't fix the problem, the failure keeps returning, or your RX is out of service for an extended period, you may be entitled to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement under California's Lemon Law — with Lexus paying your attorney fees.
My RX is a Lexus and they're supposed to be reliable — can it still be a lemon?
Yes. Reliability is a reputation, not a guarantee, and California's Lemon Law applies to any vehicle sold with a warranty. If your specific RX has a substantial defect the dealer can't fix after a reasonable number of attempts, it can qualify no matter how well the model does on average.
What can I recover for a defective RX?
Potentially a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — plus your attorney fees paid by Lexus. There's no cost to you to pursue a claim.
