Lexus ES Lemon Law

Talk to a Lexus lemon law attorney — your Lexus ES may qualify for a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement.

If your Lexus ES has stalled, run rough, or refused to start, a defective fuel pump may be to blame — and if the multimedia system keeps glitching on top of it, you're dealing with more than bad luck. When Lexus can't fix the problem, your ES may qualify as a California lemon.

The Defect

The ES fuel pump stalling problem

The ES's best-known defect is a low-pressure fuel pump supplied by Denso. Lexus recalled 2018–2020 ES 350 vehicles (part of the Denso fuel-pump campaign, NHTSA 20V012, which was later expanded) after finding that the pump's plastic impeller was made with insufficient resin density, letting it absorb fuel, deform, and create excess resistance. When that happens the engine can run rough, illuminate warning lights, stall, or fail to start — and a stall at highway speed is a serious crash risk.

Beyond the fuel pump, ES owners report a range of problems that can add up to a lemon: infotainment and navigation screens that freeze or reboot, Bluetooth and connectivity dropouts, climate-control and A/C failures, and various electrical and sensor faults. On the ES 300h hybrid, some drivers also report hybrid-system and battery-related warnings. Individually these seem minor, but a defect the dealer can't cure after repeated attempts is what the Lemon Law is built for.

California's Lemon Law focuses on your particular car, not the model's reputation. If a warranty-covered defect substantially impairs the ES's use, value, or safety and isn't fixed after a reasonable number of repair attempts — or if the car spends an unreasonable amount of time in the shop — you may be owed a buyback, a replacement, or a cash settlement, with Lexus paying your attorney fees. A recall repair that doesn't hold frequently supports a claim.

Known Issues

Commonly Reported Lexus ES Problems

Fuel pump failure causing rough running, stalling, or a no-start
Check-engine and warning lights tied to fuel or engine faults
Infotainment or navigation screen freezing, rebooting, or losing Bluetooth
Climate-control, A/C, and general electrical or sensor malfunctions
Hybrid-system or battery warnings on the ES 300h

Not every Lexus ES is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.

Your Rights

Is Your Lexus ES a Lemon?

A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your ES has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.

If your Lexus ES qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and Lexus pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Common Questions

Lexus ES Lemon Law FAQs

Is the Lexus ES fuel pump problem covered by California's Lemon Law?

It can be. The Denso fuel-pump defect that causes stalling was recalled (NHTSA 20V012), but a recall alone isn't a lemon. If the replacement pump doesn't solve the problem, the stalling or no-start returns, or your ES is out of service for an extended time, you may be entitled to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement under California's Lemon Law — with Lexus paying your attorney fees.

My ES stalled while driving — what should I do?

A stall in traffic is a serious safety defect. Have the fuel-pump recall repair performed, keep every repair order, and note each date the car was in the shop or unusable. If the fix doesn't hold or the problem recurs, get a free case review — your ES may qualify as a lemon.

Can a reliable model like the ES really be a lemon?

Yes. California's Lemon Law applies to any warranted vehicle regardless of how well the model does on average. If your individual ES has a substantial defect Lexus can't repair after a reasonable number of attempts, it can qualify for a buyback or replacement.
