Lexus NX Lemon Law

Talk to a Lexus lemon law attorney — your Lexus NX may qualify for a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement.

If your Lexus NX loses its backup camera when you reverse, won't charge properly as a plug-in hybrid, or fights you with a glitchy touchscreen, you may have more than a quirk. When Lexus can't fix the defect, your NX may qualify as a California lemon.

The Defect

The NX camera and PHEV charging problems

The second-generation NX has two notable defects. First, Lexus recalled certain 2022–2025 NX non-hybrid vehicles (NHTSA campaign 26V162) because the rearview camera image can go blank when the driver shifts into reverse — a brief power drop during an engine restart can interrupt the camera before it loads, which violates federal rear-visibility standard FMVSS 111. Second, the NX450h+ plug-in hybrid was recalled because a rectifying module inside the DC-DC converter could be damaged in production, risking an electrical short; owners were even told not to charge in cold weather until the converter was replaced.

NX owners also report the everyday problems that can build into a lemon claim: infotainment and navigation systems that freeze, reboot, or drop Bluetooth and phone connections, wireless charging and USB faults, climate-control and A/C issues, and assorted electrical or sensor warnings. For a compact luxury SUV that's supposed to be trouble-free, repeated trips to the dealer for the same complaint are exactly what California's Lemon Law addresses.

The Lemon Law looks at your specific NX, not the brand's reputation. If a warranty-covered defect substantially affects the vehicle's use, value, or safety and isn't repaired after a reasonable number of attempts — or the NX is stuck in the shop or waiting on parts for an extended time — you may be entitled to a buyback, a replacement, or a cash settlement, with Lexus paying your attorney fees. A recall repair that doesn't fully fix the problem often strengthens a claim.

Known Issues

Commonly Reported Lexus NX Problems

Backup/rearview camera image going blank when shifting into reverse
NX450h+ plug-in hybrid charging faults or DC-DC converter concerns
Infotainment or navigation freezing, rebooting, or dropping Bluetooth
Wireless charging, USB, and general electrical or sensor faults
Repeat repairs or long parts delays that keep the NX out of service

Not every Lexus NX is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.

Your Rights

Is Your Lexus NX a Lemon?

A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your NX has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.

If your Lexus NX qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and Lexus pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Common Questions

Lexus NX Lemon Law FAQs

Is my Lexus NX problem covered by California's Lemon Law?

It can be. The blank backup camera was recalled (NHTSA 26V162) and the NX450h+ had a separate DC-DC converter recall, but a recall by itself isn't a lemon. If the repair doesn't fix the problem, the failure keeps returning, or your NX is out of service for an extended time, you may be owed a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement under California's Lemon Law — with Lexus paying your attorney fees.

My NX450h+ won't charge properly — does that count?

It can. Charging and DC-DC converter faults can substantially impair a plug-in hybrid's use and safety. Have the recall and any warranty repairs performed, keep your repair orders, and note every day the vehicle was unusable. If the problem persists, your NX may qualify as a lemon.

What can I recover for a defective NX?

Potentially a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — plus your attorney fees paid by Lexus. There's no cost to you to pursue a claim.
