Kia Seltos Lemon Law

Talk to a Kia lemon law attorney — your Kia Seltos may qualify for a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement.

If your Kia Seltos is burning through oil, knocking or ticking, flashing an oil pressure warning, or losing power, you're dealing with a known engine defect — not normal wear. If the dealer can't fix it after a fair chance, your Seltos may qualify as a California lemon.

The Defect

The Seltos piston oil ring engine defect

The signature Seltos problem is a piston oil ring defect in the 2.0L Nu MPI engine. Because of a manufacturing deviation by the ring supplier, the oil ring can scuff the cylinder wall over time, driving up oil consumption. Owners typically notice the car burning oil between changes, then abnormal engine noise, then an oil pressure warning light — and if the vehicle keeps being driven, the engine can suffer damage or seizure and lose motive power, with a fire risk if oil reaches a hot exhaust component.

Kia recalled certain 2021–2023 Seltos vehicles built with the 2.0L Nu MPI engine (NHTSA campaign 25V099, roughly 53,635 Seltos units within a larger Soul and Seltos recall) to inspect and, where needed, replace the engine and to install piston-ring noise-sensing software that warns the driver of trouble. But owners have reported inconsistent inspections, long waits for parts, and engines that keep consuming oil or fail again after service.

Beyond the oil-ring issue, Seltos owners also report infotainment and rearview-camera glitches, transmission hesitation, and electrical faults. Under California's Lemon Law, if a defect that substantially affects the use, value, or safety of your Seltos can't be repaired after a reasonable number of attempts — or the car is out of service for an extended time — you may be entitled to a buyback, a replacement, or a cash settlement, with Kia paying your attorney fees.

Known Issues

Commonly Reported Kia Seltos Problems

Excessive oil consumption between scheduled changes
Engine knocking, ticking, or abnormal noise and oil pressure warning light
Loss of engine power, stalling, or seizure in severe cases
Infotainment freezes and rearview-camera glitches
Repeat engine trouble after the recall repair, or long waits for parts

Not every Kia Seltos is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.

Your Rights

Is Your Kia Seltos a Lemon?

A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your Seltos has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.

If your Kia Seltos qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and Kia pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Common Questions

Kia Seltos Lemon Law FAQs

Is the Kia Seltos engine oil-consumption problem covered by California's Lemon Law?

It can be. The piston oil ring defect that causes oil burning and engine damage was recalled (NHTSA 25V099), but a recall by itself isn't a lemon. If the repair doesn't fix the problem, the engine keeps consuming oil or fails again, or your Seltos sits for an extended time waiting on parts, you may be owed a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement — with Kia paying your attorney fees.

My Seltos is burning oil and knocking — what should I do?

Treat it seriously; continued driving can lead to engine seizure and power loss. Have the recall inspection and any repair performed, save every repair order, and write down each date the car was in the shop or unusable. Then get a free case review — if the fix doesn't hold, your Seltos may qualify as a lemon.

What can I recover if my Seltos is a lemon?

Potentially a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — plus your attorney fees paid by Kia. There's no cost to you to pursue a claim.
