Kia Forte Lemon Law
Talk to a Kia lemon law attorney — your Kia Forte may qualify for a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement.
If your Kia Forte has been burning oil, knocking, stalling, or was swept up in the theft-vulnerability wave, those are known Forte complaints. When the dealer can't fix the problem after repeated attempts, your Forte may qualify as a California lemon.
The Forte engine and anti-theft problems
One of the more serious Forte defects involved 2014–2015 Forte and Forte Koup models, which Kia recalled after determining the vehicles could suffer an engine-compartment fire while being driven. Beyond that recall, Forte owners across model years commonly report excessive oil consumption, engine knocking, stalling, and repeated check-engine warnings — the kind of drivetrain problems that keep sending a car back to the dealer.
The Forte was also part of Kia's nationwide anti-theft service campaign, because many of these cars lack an industry-standard engine immobilizer and became a target of a viral theft challenge. Kia offered a free software update to extend the alarm and require the key to start the car, but some owners report the update interfered with remote start and other features. Additional common complaints include transmission shifting issues, electrical glitches, and infotainment problems.
Under California's Lemon Law, you have protection when a vehicle still under its manufacturer warranty has a defect that substantially impairs its use, value, or safety and the manufacturer can't repair it within a reasonable number of attempts, or the car is out of service for an extended period. A recall or a service campaign does not erase those rights. If your Forte keeps coming back with the same problem, you may be entitled to a buyback, a replacement, or a cash settlement, with Kia paying your attorney fees.
Commonly Reported Kia Forte Problems
Not every Kia Forte is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.
Is Your Kia Forte a Lemon?
A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your Forte has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.
If your Kia Forte qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and Kia pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Does California's Lemon Law cover my Kia Forte?
It can. Whether the issue is the engine-fire recall on 2014–2015 models, oil consumption, stalling, or an electrical fault, a recall or service campaign doesn't take away your rights. If the dealer can't fix the defect after a reasonable number of attempts, or your Forte sits in the shop too long, you may be entitled to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement, with Kia paying your attorney fees.
The anti-theft update broke my Forte's remote start — is that a lemon issue?
It can factor in. If a warranty repair or software update creates a new defect the dealer can't resolve, or your Forte also has an unfixable engine or transmission problem, keep every repair order and get a free case review to see whether it qualifies under the Lemon Law.
What will a Forte lemon law case cost me?
Nothing out of pocket. Under California's Lemon Law, Kia pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so you can pursue a buyback or replacement without paying upfront.
