Audi Q5 Lemon Law

If your Audi Q5 was recalled for an engine oil leak that can cause a fire, or a rear-axle defect that can affect control, you shouldn't have to worry in a luxury SUV. If it can't be fixed, your Q5 may qualify as a California lemon.

The Defect

The Audi Q5 oil-leak fire and axle recalls

Audi recalled about 89,000 model year 2022–2024 Q5 Quattro and Q5 Sportback Quattro vehicles because the cylinder-head cover screws may have been improperly tightened and can loosen, allowing oil to leak — which increases the risk of an engine fire. In a separate recall, a lock nut on the rear-axle trailing arm can break due to stress corrosion, which can misalign the rear axle and cause a loss of control.

Owners also report electrical, infotainment, and drivability complaints on the Q5. A fire risk or a loss-of-control defect is among the most serious problems a vehicle can have.

A recall isn't automatically a lemon. But if a substantial defect can't be repaired after a reasonable number of attempts, or your Q5 is out of service for an extended time, California's Lemon Law may entitle you to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement — with Audi paying your attorney fees.

Known Issues

Commonly Reported Audi Q5 Problems

Cylinder-head cover screws loosening — oil leak and fire risk, subject to recall
Rear-axle trailing-arm lock nut break — axle misalignment / loss of control, subject to recall
Electrical and infotainment glitches
Drivability and warning-light complaints
Repeat repairs that don't resolve the problem

Not every Audi Q5 is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.

Your Rights

Is Your Audi Q5 a Lemon?

A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your Q5 has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.

If your Audi Q5 qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and Audi pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Common Questions

Audi Q5 Lemon Law FAQs

Was the Audi Q5 recalled for a fire risk?

Yes. Audi recalled about 89,000 model year 2022–2024 Q5 vehicles because cylinder-head cover screws can loosen and let oil leak, raising fire risk, plus a separate rear-axle recall. Confirm your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Is a recurring Q5 defect a lemon?

It can be. A fire risk or loss-of-control defect is a serious safety issue. If it can't be repaired after a reasonable number of attempts, or your Q5 is out of service for an extended time, you may have a California lemon law claim, with Audi paying your attorney fees.

What can I recover for a defective Q5?

Potentially a buyback (a refund minus a mileage offset), a replacement, or a cash-and-keep settlement — plus your attorney fees paid by Audi, at no cost to you.
