Audi A4 Lemon Law
Talk to a Audi lemon law attorney — your Audi A4 may qualify for a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement.
If your Audi A4 keeps needing oil between services, rattles on cold start, or throws electrical gremlins the dealer can't pin down, you're not alone — these are well-known A4 defects. If Audi can't fix the problem after reasonable attempts, your A4 may be a California lemon.
The A4 oil consumption problem
The B8 A4's 2.0 TFSI engine is notorious for excessive oil consumption, hitting early model years hardest. The problem is widely blamed on a weak piston-ring and piston-skirt design that lets oil slip past into the combustion chamber, sometimes worsened by a clogged PCV valve that forces oil past the rings. Owners report constant top-offs and recurring low-oil warnings.
Many of these same engines suffer timing chain tensioner failure. The tensioner keeps the timing chain tight; when it wears out it lets the chain go slack, producing a rattle on cold start, rough running, and misfires. If the chain jumps timing, the pistons and valves can collide and destroy the engine — a catastrophic, safety-related failure.
A4 owners also report persistent electrical faults — failing sensors, glitchy infotainment, and dashboard warning lights that return after software updates or part swaps. When oil consumption, a failing tensioner, or electrical defects keep recurring despite repeated repairs, California's Lemon Law may entitle you to a buyback or replacement.
Commonly Reported Audi A4 Problems
Not every Audi A4 is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.
Is Your Audi A4 a Lemon?
A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your A4 has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.
If your Audi A4 qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and Audi pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Does California's Lemon Law cover Audi A4 oil consumption?
It can. If your A4 burns oil excessively and Audi can't fix it after a reasonable number of repair attempts, the defect may substantially impair the car's use or value — which can entitle you to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement, with Audi paying your attorney fees.
My A4 rattles on cold start — could it be the timing chain tensioner?
Possibly. A rattle on cold start is a classic sign of a failing timing chain tensioner, and if the chain jumps it can ruin the engine. Have it inspected immediately, keep all repair records, and get a free case review — a defect this serious can strengthen a lemon law claim.
How much does an A4 lemon law case cost me?
Nothing out of pocket. Under California's Lemon Law, Audi pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so you can pursue a buyback or replacement without paying upfront.
