NHTSA Recall 26V587000: 2025 VW Tiguan Body Control Module Can Reset and Stall the Engine

What the recall covers

Recall 26V587000 (Volkswagen reference 57KL) covers 49,958 model-year 2025 Volkswagen Tiguans. A software error can make the body control module — the module that supervises much of the vehicle's electrical architecture — reset itself. NHTSA's filing describes several consequences of that reset: the ignition can switch off and stall the engine, the vehicle can lose certain controls, warning lights or exterior lighting, and the rearview camera system can fail. Because of that combination, NHTSA records these vehicles as failing to comply with four separate Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards at once — FMVSS 101 (controls and displays), FMVSS 102 (transmission shift lever sequence and starter interlock), FMVSS 108 (lamps and reflective devices), and FMVSS 111 (rear visibility). Four simultaneous noncompliances from a single module reset is unusual, and it is a measure of how much of the vehicle this one defect touches.

The remedy

Volkswagen dealers will update the body control module software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 6, 2026; VINs became searchable on NHTSA.gov on September 17, 2026. NHTSA's filing records this as a dealer-performed update rather than an over-the-air push — which means the visit generates a written repair order. Keep it.

What owners should do now

• Treat a stall as the headline risk, not the camera. A vehicle that shuts off at a freeway merge or in an intersection is a different category of problem from a blank backup display.
• If the Tiguan has already stalled, gone dark, or lost its camera, report each incident to the dealer separately and by date — even the ones that resolved on a restart. Intermittent electronic faults are routinely written up as "could not duplicate," and a dated complaint on a repair order is what survives that.
• Schedule the software update now rather than waiting for the November letter. VINs have been searchable since September 17.
• Insist on a repair order for the recall visit that records your symptoms in your words, not just the campaign code 57KL. A line reading only "performed 57KL" documents Volkswagen's work, not your complaint.
• If the stalling, lighting faults or camera failures continue after the reflash, stop assuming the next update will fix it. Document the recurrence and get the vehicle reviewed — a defect that survives a documented repair attempt is the core of a lemon law claim.
• Note that this is the third recall on the 2025 Tiguan. If yours is also covered by the tie rod bolt campaign (25V526000) or the passenger occupant detection campaign (25V854000), have the open campaigns addressed together and keep all three repair orders.
