Land Rover Defender Lemon Law

If your Land Rover Defender keeps sagging on its air suspension, throwing check-engine warnings, dropping into reduced power, or stalling, you're not alone. If the problems can't be fixed, your Defender may qualify as a California lemon.

The Defect

Common Land Rover Defender defects

One of the most common Defender complaints is failure of the electronic air (dynamic) suspension — typically a slow leak that lets a corner sag when parked and overworks the air compressor until it fails. Owners also report check-engine warnings traced to software rather than hardware, which in some cases put the vehicle into reduced-power mode or cause it to stall while driving.

The Defender has also been recalled — including an oil filter housing that can crack and leak oil into the engine compartment, creating a fire risk, and (on certain Defender 130 models with third-row seats) a seatback latch that may not lock properly. Premature air-conditioning failures are common too.

A recall isn't automatically a lemon. But when the suspension or stalling problems keep returning after repairs, or your Defender is out of service for an extended time, California's Lemon Law may entitle you to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement — with the manufacturer paying your attorney fees.

Known Issues

Commonly Reported Land Rover Defender Problems

Air (dynamic) suspension leaks, corner sag, and compressor failure
Software-related check-engine warnings, reduced power, or stalling
Oil filter housing crack and oil leak / fire risk — subject to recall
Third-row seatback latch not locking (certain Defender 130) — subject to recall
Premature air-conditioning failure

Not every Land Rover Defender is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.

Your Rights

Is Your Land Rover Defender a Lemon?

A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your Defender has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.

If your Land Rover Defender qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and Land Rover pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Common Questions

Land Rover Defender Lemon Law FAQs

Is Land Rover Defender air suspension failure a lemon law issue?

It can be. Persistent air-suspension leaks, sagging, and compressor failures the dealer can't fix after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keep your Defender in the shop — may qualify under California's Lemon Law for a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement, with the manufacturer paying your attorney fees.

My Defender stalls or drops into reduced power — what are my rights?

Stalling and loss of power are serious safety defects. If the problem can't be repaired after a reasonable number of attempts, or your Defender is out of service for an extended time, you may have a California lemon law claim. Keep every repair order and get a free case review.

What can I recover for a defective Defender?

Potentially a buyback (a refund minus a mileage offset), a replacement, or a cash-and-keep settlement — plus your attorney fees paid by the manufacturer, at no cost to you.
