Ram ProMaster Lemon Law

If your Ram ProMaster work van was recalled for a fire risk or a rollaway defect, or keeps breaking down, that downtime costs your business money. If it can't be fixed, your ProMaster may qualify as a California lemon — even as a business vehicle.

The Defect

The Ram ProMaster fire and rollaway problems

Ram recalled about 291,664 ProMaster vans (2018–2026) because premature bearing wear in the cooling-fan motor, combined with inadequate fuse protection on the fan circuit, can cause a high current draw and a vehicle fire. A separate recall covered roughly 165,503 2019–2021 ProMasters with the 62TE transmission because the park pawl may not fully engage the park gear due to internal debris, allowing the van to roll away.

For a cargo van businesses depend on, a fire risk or an unexpected rollaway is a serious safety and financial problem — and downtime hits the bottom line.

A recall isn't automatically a lemon. But if the repair is delayed, doesn't resolve the problem, or your ProMaster is out of service for an extended time, California's Lemon Law may entitle you to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement — with the manufacturer paying your attorney fees.

Known Issues

Commonly Reported Ram ProMaster Problems

Cooling-fan motor bearing wear + inadequate fuse — fire risk, subject to recall
62TE transmission park pawl not engaging — rollaway risk, subject to recall (2019–2021)
Electrical faults and warning lights
Downtime that disrupts your business
Repeat repairs that don't resolve the problem

Not every Ram ProMaster is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.

Your Rights

Is Your Ram ProMaster a Lemon?

A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your ProMaster has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.

If your Ram ProMaster qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and Ram pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Common Questions

Ram ProMaster Lemon Law FAQs

Was the Ram ProMaster recalled for a fire risk?

Yes. Ram recalled about 291,664 ProMaster vans (2018–2026) because the cooling-fan circuit can overheat and cause a fire, plus a separate recall for a transmission park-pawl rollaway risk on 2019–2021 vans. Confirm your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Is my ProMaster covered if it's a business/work van?

Often, yes. Two requirements apply to business vehicles under California's Lemon Law: (1) your business has five or fewer motor vehicles registered in California, and (2) the vehicle's actual curb weight is under 10,000 pounds — measured by curb weight, not the higher GVWR. A ProMaster's curb weight is well under 10,000 lbs, so a work van meets the weight test. It also has to be under warranty with a substantial unrepaired defect. See our business-vehicle guide for the details.

What can I recover for a defective ProMaster?

Potentially a buyback (a refund minus a mileage offset), a replacement, or a cash-and-keep settlement — plus your attorney fees paid by the manufacturer, at no cost to you.
