Ram 2500 & 3500 Lemon Law
If your Ram 2500 or 3500 with the 6.7L Cummins diesel has stalled, lost power, or suffered a CP4 high-pressure fuel pump failure, you're not alone — Ram recalled hundreds of thousands of these trucks. If it can't be fixed, your truck may qualify as a California lemon, even if you use it for work.
The Ram Cummins CP4 fuel pump failure
Stellantis recalled about 222,410 model year 2019–2020 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups (and 3500/4500/5500 chassis cabs) with the 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel because the Bosch CP4 high-pressure fuel pump can fail. The pump struggles with the lower lubricity of American diesel fuel, and friction between metal parts can generate metal shavings that contaminate and damage the fuel system — leading to fuel starvation and an unexpected loss of drive power, without warning.
The remedy is to replace the high-pressure fuel pump, update the powertrain control module software, and inspect and, if necessary, replace additional fuel-system components — free of charge. A class-action lawsuit alleged the same defect before the recall was issued.
A recall isn't automatically a lemon. But sudden loss of power in a heavy diesel truck is a serious safety defect. If the repair doesn't hold, the failure recurs, or your truck is out of service for an extended time, California's Lemon Law may entitle you to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement — with the manufacturer paying your attorney fees.
Commonly Reported Ram 2500 & 3500 Problems
Not every Ram 2500 & 3500 is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.
Is Your Ram 2500 & 3500 a Lemon?
A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your 2500 & 3500 has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.
If your Ram 2500 & 3500 qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and Ram pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Was the Ram 2500/3500 Cummins recalled for the fuel pump?
Yes. Stellantis recalled about 222,410 model year 2019–2020 Ram 2500/3500 (and 3500/4500/5500 chassis cab) trucks with the 6.7L Cummins because the CP4 high-pressure fuel pump can fail and cause a loss of power. The remedy replaces the pump, updates software, and inspects the fuel system. Confirm your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Is my Ram 2500 or 3500 covered if I use it for my business?
Often, yes. Two requirements apply to business vehicles under California's Lemon Law: (1) your business has five or fewer motor vehicles registered in California, and (2) the vehicle's actual curb weight is under 10,000 pounds — measured by curb weight, not the higher GVWR. Many Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks have a curb weight under 10,000 lbs even though their GVWR is higher, so a work-use HD truck can still qualify (confirm your truck's curb weight). It also has to be under warranty with a substantial unrepaired defect. See our business-vehicle guide for the details.
What can I recover for a defective Ram 2500/3500?
Potentially a buyback (a refund minus a mileage offset), a replacement, or a cash-and-keep settlement — plus your attorney fees paid by the manufacturer, at no cost to you.
