NHTSA Recall 26V597000: Rivian Rearview Camera May Be Obstructed
Rivian is recalling more than 98,000 R1S, R1T and R2 vehicles because an on-screen notification may block the rearview camera image when the vehicle is in reverse. The fix is an over-the-air software update. Here is what recall 26V597000 means for owners.

What the recall covers
Recall 26V597000 (Rivian reference FSAM-1866) covers 98,828 Rivian vehicles — R1S SUVs from model years 2022 through 2027, R1T trucks from 2022 through 2026, and 2027 R2 SUVs — whose rearview camera image may be obstructed by a software notification when the vehicle is in reverse. NHTSA cites Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 (rear visibility) and records the consequence as reduced rear visibility and increased crash risk.
The remedy
Rivian will correct the problem with a free over-the-air software update. Owner letters are scheduled to begin mailing November 9, 2026. NHTSA does not list a park-outside or do-not-drive instruction. NHTSA's database lists the over-the-air flag as false even though the remedy is an OTA update, so confirm with Rivian that the update has actually been installed on your vehicle.
What owners should do now
- Until the update installs, do not rely on the camera alone when reversing — check mirrors, look over your shoulder, and use the parking sensors if equipped.
- Keep the vehicle connected to Wi-Fi and software updates enabled so the over-the-air fix can download.
- If a notification covers the image when you shift into reverse, note what the notification said and when it happened.
- Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and in the Rivian app to confirm whether the update is pending or complete.
- Because an over-the-air fix may leave no repair order, save a screenshot of the software version and the date the update installed.
How to check your VIN
Confirm coverage by entering the 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or checking the Rivian app. The recall spans several model years and three models, so check the VIN rather than assuming coverage from the model name.

When this recall can become a California lemon law claim
A recall is not automatically a lemon — it is the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free fix. Your Rivian may qualify under California's Lemon Law if the recall repair is significantly delayed, doesn't resolve the problem, or your vehicle has other unrepaired warranty defects. In those cases you may be entitled to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement, with the manufacturer paying your attorney fees. For the full breakdown, see the guides below.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this recall cover the new R2?
Yes. NHTSA lists the 2027 R2 along with the R1S (2022–2027) and R1T (2022–2026), for 98,828 vehicles in total.
Will I have to visit a service center?
Rivian's remedy is a free over-the-air software update, so most owners will not. Confirm it installed — an OTA fix can leave no paperwork.
