What the recall covers
Recall 26V547000 (Ford reference 26C40) covers 148,663 model-year 2024 through 2026 Ford Mustang coupes and convertibles whose engine-compartment wiring harness ground connections may fracture. NHTSA records the possible results as a loss of drive power, or a loss of function in the windshield washing system, headlights, air conditioning or engine cooling fan. The campaign cites two federal standards — FMVSS 108 (lighting) and FMVSS 104 (windshield wiping and washing). It does not include the Mustang Mach-E.
The remedy
Ford dealers will replace the engine-compartment wiring harness ground terminals, free of charge. Interim owner letters were scheduled to begin September 5, 2026, with further letters to follow once the remedy is available, anticipated in March 2027. VINs became searchable on NHTSA.gov on August 28, 2026. NHTSA does not list a park-outside or do-not-drive instruction. In the meantime, owners are driving with a known defect and a repair that is months away.
What owners should do now
- Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and register with Ford so you are notified the moment the final remedy is available.
- If the Mustang loses power while driving, signal, move to the shoulder if possible, and turn on the hazard lights. Do not assume a restart will fix it.
- Pay attention to headlights flickering or failing, a washer that stops working, an A/C that cuts out, or the engine temperature climbing — these can be symptoms of the fractured ground.
- Report any of those symptoms to the dealer in writing the first time they occur; each report becomes a documented repair attempt.
- Whatever the fix, insist on a written repair order that records the date, the mileage, and your specific complaint. A repair order is what turns a recall visit into evidence if the problem comes back.

When this recall can become a California lemon law claim
A recall is not automatically a lemon — it is the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free fix. Your Ford may qualify under California's Lemon Law if the recall repair is significantly delayed, doesn't resolve the problem, or your vehicle has other unrepaired warranty defects. In those cases you may be entitled to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement, with the manufacturer paying your attorney fees. For the full breakdown, see the guides below.
