Toyota bZ4X Lemon Law

The bZ4X made headlines at launch when Toyota issued a do-not-drive recall (NHTSA campaign 22V444) on 2023 models because the wheel hub bolts could loosen and allow a wheel to come off while driving — an issue serious enough to briefly halt sales. Toyota replaced the hub bolts and wheels, but the episode left many early owners wary of the car's reliability.

Since then, bZ4X owners have focused on the drivetrain and electronics: slower-than-expected DC fast charging, significant range loss and sluggish charging in cold weather, and a separate software recall covering the heating and defroster system, where a compressor-control fault could cut cabin heat and reduce windshield defrosting. Owners also report infotainment and 12-volt battery quirks. California's Lemon Law covers any substantial defect the manufacturer can't repair after a reasonable number of attempts, or that keeps the EV out of service for an extended time — entitling the owner to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement.

A recall alone doesn't make an EV a lemon, but a repair that doesn't hold, a defect that keeps returning, or long waits for parts and software fixes are the patterns that support a claim. Keep every repair order and note each day the bZ4X is unusable or won't charge properly, then request a free case review.
