Mazda CX-70 Lemon Law

Talk to a Mazda lemon law attorney — your Mazda CX-70 may qualify for a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement.

If your Mazda CX-70 has lost drive power, lit up the dash with warning lights, or left you fighting a frozen Mazda Connect screen and startup glitches, you're not imagining it — the first-year CX-70 has had software and electrical trouble from the start. If the dealer can't fix it after repeated tries, your CX-70 may qualify as a California lemon.

The Defect

The CX-70 loss-of-drive-power and software problem

The 2025 CX-70 launched with a series of software defects tied to its powertrain and electrical control modules. Mazda recalled certain 2025 CX-70 vehicles (NHTSA campaign 24V814000) because the powertrain control module and engine control module software could illuminate warning lights and cause a loss of drive power — a serious safety concern if it happens in traffic or at speed. A separate action addressed plug-in hybrid CX-70s where faulty inverter software could cut power while driving in EV mode.

Beyond the powertrain, owners of this first-model-year SUV report a cluster of electrical and interface faults: the Dash Electrical Supply Unit can leave the defroster, 360-degree camera, seat-belt warning, and PHEV battery cooling non-functional at startup; the Mazda Connect infotainment screen freezes, reboots, or drops the backup camera and phone connection; and some owners have seen the fuel gauge read fuel remaining when the tank is actually empty. Individually these can be a nuisance; together, and when repairs don't hold, they point to a vehicle that isn't performing as promised.

California's Lemon Law can apply when a defect that substantially impairs the use, value, or safety of your CX-70 isn't fixed after a reasonable number of repair attempts, or when the vehicle is out of service for an extended time. A software recall alone doesn't make a car a lemon — but if the reflash doesn't work, the problem returns, or you keep coming back for the same issue, you may be entitled to a buyback, a replacement, or a cash settlement, with Mazda paying your attorney fees.

Known Issues

Commonly Reported Mazda CX-70 Problems

Loss of drive power or warning lights from powertrain/engine control module software (recalled)
Startup faults leaving the defroster, 360-degree camera, or seat-belt warning inoperative
Mazda Connect infotainment freezing, rebooting, or dropping the backup camera and phone
Fuel gauge showing fuel remaining when the tank is empty
PHEV inverter or high-voltage battery cooling faults, sometimes with reduced power in EV mode

Not every Mazda CX-70 is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.

Your Rights

Is Your Mazda CX-70 a Lemon?

A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your CX-70 has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.

If your Mazda CX-70 qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and Mazda pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Common Questions

Mazda CX-70 Lemon Law FAQs

Is the Mazda CX-70 power-loss problem covered by California's Lemon Law?

It can be. The powertrain and engine control module software that can cause a loss of drive power was recalled (NHTSA 24V814000), but a recall by itself isn't a lemon. If the reprogramming doesn't fix it, the problem comes back, or your CX-70 is stuck in the shop for an extended time, you may be owed a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement — with Mazda paying your attorney fees.

My CX-70's screen and cameras keep glitching — does that count?

It can. Mazda Connect freezes, a dropped backup camera, and startup faults that disable the defroster or 360-degree view affect the use, value, and in some cases the safety of the vehicle. Keep every repair order, note each date the SUV was in the shop, and get a free case review to see if it qualifies.

What can I recover for a defective CX-70?

Potentially a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — plus your attorney fees paid by Mazda. There's no cost to you to pursue a claim.
