Jeep Renegade Lemon Law

Talk to a Jeep lemon law attorney — your Jeep Renegade may qualify for a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement.

If your Jeep Renegade has stalled unexpectedly, dropped into neutral on its own, or thrown a string of electrical warnings, you're not alone — these are documented Renegade problems. When the dealer can't fix them, your Renegade may qualify as a California lemon.

The Defect

The Renegade stalling and drivetrain problem

The Renegade has a history of powertrain and electrical failures that can leave the vehicle stalled or unable to move. On certain 2018 Renegades, a faulty voltage-regulator chip inside the powertrain control module could cause the engine to stall or fail to start; Chrysler addressed those vehicles under NHTSA recall 18V524 by replacing the powertrain control module. Stalling is dangerous because it can strip away power steering and braking assist without warning.

The nine-speed automatic transmission has drawn its own complaints. On earlier Renegades, a wiring problem in the transmission sensor cluster could make the transmission unexpectedly shift into neutral, and owners across model years report harsh, delayed, or erratic shifting, hesitation, and warning lights. Manual-transmission Renegades have faced separate clutch-related concerns.

Layered on top are electrical gremlins — battery drain, sensor faults, infotainment and warning-light issues — that can send a Renegade back to the dealer again and again. When a stalling, transmission, or electrical defect isn't fixed after a reasonable number of repair attempts, or your Renegade racks up too many days out of service, California's Lemon Law may entitle you to a buyback or replacement.

Known Issues

Commonly Reported Jeep Renegade Problems

Engine stalling or no-start conditions, including a recalled 2018 PCM defect (NHTSA 18V524)
Transmission unexpectedly shifting to neutral or shifting harshly and erratically
Hesitation, delayed engagement, and warning lights from the nine-speed automatic
Clutch-related trouble on manual-transmission Renegades
Electrical faults, battery drain, and repeat dealer visits that don't resolve the issue

Not every Jeep Renegade is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.

Your Rights

Is Your Jeep Renegade a Lemon?

A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your Renegade has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.

If your Jeep Renegade qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and Jeep pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Common Questions

Jeep Renegade Lemon Law FAQs

Does California's Lemon Law cover Jeep Renegade stalling and transmission problems?

It can. Some Renegade stalling was addressed by recall (NHTSA 18V524 for a 2018 PCM defect), but a recall alone isn't a lemon. If your Renegade keeps stalling, shifting to neutral, or throwing electrical faults after a reasonable number of repair attempts, you may be owed a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement, with Jeep paying your attorney fees.

My Renegade stalled while driving — is that a safety defect?

Yes. A stall can eliminate power steering and braking assist and leave you stranded, so California treats it as a serious safety defect that requires fewer failed repair attempts to qualify. Have the repair performed, keep every repair order, and get a free case review.

What will a Renegade lemon law claim cost me?

Nothing out of pocket. Under California's Lemon Law, Jeep pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so you can pursue a buyback or replacement without paying upfront.
