Ford F-150 Lightning Lemon Law

If your Ford F-150 Lightning was recalled for a high-voltage battery fire risk, or has electrical and headlight problems, you shouldn't have to worry about your electric truck. If it can't be fixed, your Lightning may qualify as a California lemon.

The Defect

The F-150 Lightning battery fire and electrical problems

Ford recalled F-150 Lightning trucks because high-voltage battery cells (supplied by SK Battery America) may have been manufactured with misaligned electrodes, which can cause an internal short circuit over repeated charge and discharge cycles — and Ford does not rule out a high-voltage battery fire. Ford reported multiple fire incidents and an injury claim before filing. A separate recall covered loose or missing battery bus-bar retention nuts that can cause electrical arcing and fire.

The Lightning has also faced a stop-ship over headlight connectors that aren't properly sealed, letting moisture cause flickering or shorted headlights, plus the software and charging quirks common to early EVs.

A recall isn't automatically a lemon. But a battery fire risk is a substantial safety defect, and if the fix is delayed, doesn't resolve the problem, or your Lightning is out of service for an extended time, California's Lemon Law may entitle you to a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement — with Ford paying your attorney fees.

Known Issues

Commonly Reported Ford F-150 Lightning Problems

High-voltage battery cell defect (misaligned electrodes) — short circuit and fire risk, subject to recall
Loose/missing battery bus-bar nuts — electrical arcing and fire risk, subject to recall
Headlight connector moisture — flickering or shorted headlights
Charging failures and reduced range
Software glitches and repeat repairs that don't resolve the problem

Not every Ford F-150 Lightning is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.

Your Rights

Is Your Ford F-150 Lightning a Lemon?

A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your F-150 Lightning has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.

If your Ford F-150 Lightning qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and Ford pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Common Questions

Ford F-150 Lightning Lemon Law FAQs

Was the Ford F-150 Lightning recalled for a battery fire?

Yes. Ford recalled F-150 Lightning trucks because high-voltage battery cells can short-circuit and risk a fire, and a separate recall covered battery bus-bar nuts that can arc. Confirm your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or ford.com.

Is a recurring Lightning defect a lemon?

It can be. A battery fire risk is a serious safety defect. If it can't be repaired after a reasonable number of attempts, or your Lightning is out of service for an extended time, you may have a California lemon law claim, with Ford paying your attorney fees.

What can I recover for a defective F-150 Lightning?

Potentially a buyback (a refund minus a mileage offset), a replacement, or a cash-and-keep settlement — plus your attorney fees paid by Ford, at no cost to you.
