BMW iX Lemon Law
Talk to a BMW lemon law attorney — your BMW iX may qualify for a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement.
If your BMW iX has lost power on the road, flashed a "Drivetrain Malfunction" warning, or refused to charge, you're not alone — BMW's flagship electric SUV has drawn several high-voltage and drive-motor recalls. If the dealer can't fix the problem after a fair number of tries, your iX may qualify as a California lemon.
The iX high-voltage and drive-motor shutdown problem
The iX's most serious reported defect is a drive-motor software error that can wrongly detect a "double-isolation" fault and shut down the high-voltage system while driving, causing a loss of propulsion for roughly 15 to 20 seconds. BMW recalled 2022–2024 iX vehicles for this condition (NHTSA campaign 25V395) with a software update. The iX has also seen high-voltage hardware recalls — including a combined charging unit that could be improperly assembled and interrupt power while driving, and battery cell modules that may not have been assembled correctly — problems that can strand the vehicle or force a lengthy dealer repair.
Alongside the recalls, iX owners report the glitches common to software-heavy EVs: DC fast-charging sessions that error out or slow to a crawl, Plug-and-Charge failing to authenticate, the iDrive infotainment or curved display freezing or rebooting, 12-volt battery drains that cause no-start conditions, and assorted rattles and build-quality complaints. When a defect substantially impairs the use, value, or safety of the vehicle and can't be repaired in a reasonable number of attempts, it can support a claim.
California's Lemon Law fully covers electric vehicles, including the iX's high-voltage battery, charging unit, drive motor, and software. If a defect that substantially impairs use, value, or safety isn't fixed after a reasonable number of repair attempts — or if your iX is out of service for an extended cumulative period waiting on parts — you may be entitled to a buyback, a replacement, or a cash settlement, with BMW paying your attorney fees. You do not need a recall to qualify; you need a defect the manufacturer could not repair.
Commonly Reported BMW iX Problems
Not every BMW iX is affected. Any substantial, warranty-covered defect that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts — or that keeps your vehicle out of service — may support a claim.
Is Your BMW iX a Lemon?
A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your iX has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.
If your BMW iX qualifies, you may be entitled to a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — and BMW pays your attorney fees on a successful claim, so pursuing your case costs you nothing out of pocket.

Is the BMW iX covered by California's Lemon Law?
It can be. The iX has seen a drive-motor software recall that can cut propulsion (NHTSA 25V395) plus charging-unit and battery-module recalls, but a recall isn't automatically a lemon. If the fixes don't hold, a defect keeps returning, or your iX sits unusable waiting on parts, you may be owed a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement — with BMW paying your attorney fees.
Do iX charging and software problems qualify, or only recalls?
They can qualify. California's Lemon Law covers electric vehicles, including the high-voltage battery, charging system, and infotainment software. If fast-charging failures, a display that keeps rebooting, or repeated 12-volt drains substantially impair your iX and BMW can't fix them in a reasonable number of attempts, you may have a claim — no recall required.
What can I recover for a defective iX?
Potentially a buyback (a refund of what you've paid, minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash-and-keep settlement — plus your attorney fees paid by BMW. There's no cost to you to pursue a claim.
