The Stelvio's signature trouble spot is water finding its way into the body control module. On 2018 Stelvios, Alfa Romeo recalled the vehicles (NHTSA recall 18V205000) after water intrusion and corrosion at the body control module and its connectors could illuminate malfunction indicator lamps and cause loss of the windshield wipers, exterior lighting, the horn, or unintended turn-signal activation — clearly safety-related failures.

Stelvio owners also report a broader set of generic problems that keep the SUV in the shop: infotainment and backup-camera glitches shared with the Giulia, an eight-speed automatic that hesitates or clunks, transmission control module and emissions-calibration reprogramming, oil and coolant leaks, and a fuel delivery module defect on some model years that can cause sudden power loss. When the same problem returns after each repair, that repetition is what matters under the Lemon Law.

California's Lemon Law isn't limited to recalled defects. If your Stelvio has any substantial warranty-covered defect that Alfa Romeo can't repair within a reasonable number of attempts, or the vehicle has been out of service for an extended time, you may be owed a buyback, a replacement, or a cash settlement — with the manufacturer paying your attorney fees.

A recall is not automatically a lemon — it's the manufacturer acknowledging a defect and offering a free repair. California's Lemon Law (the Song-Beverly Act) comes into play when a substantial defect can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, or when your Stelvio has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.
