INEOS Grenadier Lemon Law in California: Your Rights

By Arvin MousaviUpdated July 14, 20266 min read

The INEOS Grenadier is a serious, expensive off-roader built for people who wanted a no-nonsense workhorse — so mechanical and electrical trouble is especially unwelcome. California's lemon law, the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, covers the Grenadier like any other vehicle sold with a manufacturer's warranty. If a covered defect substantially impairs the vehicle's use, value, or safety and INEOS cannot repair it within a reasonable number of attempts, you may be entitled to a buyback, a replacement, or a cash settlement, with INEOS paying your attorney fees.

The steering-joint recall

The Grenadier's most serious defect is a steering problem. Certain 2023–2024 Grenadiers were recalled because non-locking nuts may have been mistakenly installed on the steering-rod ball joint. If those nuts loosen or fall off, the steering-rod ball joint can disconnect from the steering knuckle — a loss of steering that dramatically raises the risk of a crash. A defect that can sever the connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels is about as substantial a safety issue as a vehicle can have.

INEOS has also recalled certain 2024 Grenadiers over an auxiliary-switch relay whose control wire could be pinched during assembly, damaging the insulation and risking an electrical short. And in NHTSA complaint data, the most commonly reported Grenadier trouble spots are the electrical system, the powertrain, and the brakes — the fundamentals. When any of these substantially impairs the vehicle and INEOS cannot fix it after a reasonable number of tries, it can support a claim.

What a buyback is worth, and the deadline myth

A buyback refunds what you paid — down payment, monthly payments, and official fees such as tax and registration — minus a single mileage offset for the use you got before the defect first sent the vehicle in. A willful failure to comply allows a civil penalty of up to two times your actual damages, and INEOS pays your attorney fees when you win, so there is no out-of-pocket cost to pursue a claim.

The 18-month / 18,000-mile figure is a presumption period, not a deadline. Missing it costs you an automatic legal shortcut, not your claim — INEOS's obligation to repurchase a vehicle it cannot fix does not expire at 18,000 miles, and many claims are proven on the repair history alone. Frequently Asked Questions

Is the INEOS Grenadier covered by California's Lemon Law?

Yes. The Song-Beverly Act covers the Grenadier when it was sold with a manufacturer's warranty. If a substantial defect — a steering-joint fault, an electrical short, a powertrain or brake problem — can't be fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, you may be owed a buyback, replacement, or cash settlement, with INEOS paying your attorney fees.

My Grenadier was recalled for the steering. Is that a lemon?

Not automatically, but it's a serious safety recall — the steering-rod ball joint can disconnect and cause a loss of steering. If the repair doesn't hold, if related steering problems persist, or if the vehicle sits out of service, that's the pattern a lemon claim addresses. Keep the recall notice and every repair order.

The Grenadier is a new brand. Does the lemon law still apply?

Yes. Being a new manufacturer changes nothing. As long as your Grenadier was sold with a manufacturer's warranty in California and has an unrepaired substantial defect, the Song-Beverly Act applies in full.

What if I'm past 18 months or 18,000 miles?

You're likely still fine. That window is a presumption period, not a filing deadline. Missing it costs you an automatic shortcut, not your claim — many claims are proven on the repair history without relying on the presumption.
